Production and Use of Urban Space

under the Conditions of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

In summer 2003, Grenzgeografien (‘border geografies‘) has brought together for the first time Israeli, Palestinian and European researchers and students in the fields of architecture and urban design. In a unique trilateral research processstudents and expertshave investigated the production and use of space in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Grenzgeografien has since developed into a network which includes partners from the University of the Arts Berlin, Bezalel Academy of Art and Design Jerusalem, the International Peace and Cooperation Centre IPCC and the ETH Zürich. From August 2003 to May 2005 five student workshops, lectures, presentations, field trips and the international conference ‚Cities of Collision‘ (Jerusalem, Nov. 2004) were organised.

Grenzgeografien has produced unique knowledge about the ‚conflict urbanism,‘ under which urban spaces of Jerusalem and everyday practices of it‘s inhabitants are developing. The results of the research process have formed the basis for exhibitions, symposia and publications, including the book City of Collision – Jerusalem and the Principles of Conflict Urbanism.
